My name is Julie Renee Holland. I was diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian
syndrome) when I was 19. The doctor simply told me to "come back and see us when
you want to get pregnant, a little Clomid will fix you right up." Even as he
spoke I knew there was much more to this diagnosis than what he was saying. I
went home and cried for hours. I had wanted to be a mother for as long as I
could remember. In my heart I knew this disorder would make that a lot harder
than the doctor wanted to admit. I am 36 now and I still haven't fulfilled that
dream.
A few days after I was diagnosed I went to the university library
to research PCOS. All I found was two sentences each about infertility in two
books on women's health. Not one word about the serious health risks, or the
other symptoms that were taking over my life.
I was exhausted no matter
what I did. I had to eat every two hours to keep my blood sugar from dropping so
low I would stumble and slur my speech. Over time my weight crept up and my
periods all but stopped. My hair began to thin, people commented on my hairy
arms, my acne got worse in my 20's rather than better. I began the slow march
from doctor to doctor for more than a decade. Over and over I was offered Prozac
or told to "lose weight." My cholesterol rose steadily despite a healthy diet.
Not one doctor connected my PCOS with all the other symptoms. One doctor even
had the nerve to tell me there was NOTHING wrong with me.
One day a
friend told me that they had seen a study linking PCOS with insulin resistance.
I began doing some research of my own. Finally, I was finding some answers!!! It
took several more years and a lot more hassle to find some good doctors who were
willing to treat me as a whole person instead of a few symptoms. I was diagnosed
with an underlying thyroid problem in addition to the PCOS. I have much more
energy than I have had in many years. I am slowly losing weight and I am
learning to control the symptoms.
I'd love to hear from you about what is
working for you, what your concerns are, and how I can help.
